Things to do in Hayward Wisconsin

The Hayward Wisconsin area is a great place to stay in the summer, fall, and in the winter! There area many things to do in Hayward. Some of our Hayward Wisconsin Lake Rental homes pets are allowed so you can bring the entire family. (look for the icon).

There are hundreds of miles of gravel forest roads in the Hayward Area offering awesome views of forests, lakes, streams and bogs. Take the family to view fall colors or for a peaceful and relaxing bike ride down quiet backcountry roads. Wildlife viewing opportunities include whitetail deer, bald eagles, black bear, timber wolves, elk, otters, loons and beavers. There are also many wetland areas that are excellent for bird watching.

With 55,000 acres of lakes the area provides endless boating and fishing opportunities. Several large deep and clear lakes provide great water skiing, sailing, wake boarding and cruising. Fishing potential abounds with Muskellunge, Walleye, Smallmouth Bass and panfish abundant in most area lakes. Ice fishing is also great during the winter and many of our homes sit within viewing distance of rock bars and weedlines. The Namekagon River, White River, Big Brook and other area streams hold brown and brook trout.

Enjoy the many paved country roads for road cycling or hit the hundreds of miles of CAMBA trails available for mountain biking, hiking, trail running. We are active members of CAMBA and are always working to improve and expand these trails. Area mountain bike races include The Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival, Mt. Borah Epic, Chequamegon 100, Fat Bike Birkie and Seeley Lions Pre-fat. Fat Biking on groomed snow trails has also become very popular in the area and rentals and trail info may be found at New Moon Bike & Ski.

The Hayward area also offers world class cross country skiing on the American Birkebeiner, Hatchery Creek, North End, Hospital and Telemark trails. Area races include The American Birkebeiner, Seeley Hills Classic, Hayward Lions Pre-Birkie. There are endless ski trails to explore and experience casual backcountry touring to pre-race training runs across the Seeley Hills. If skiing isn’t your thing there are also miles of snowshoe trails on the CAMBA system, North End Trails and North Country Trail.

This area is also very popular for snowmobile and ATV riding on the huge trail network criss-crossing the areas forests and lakes. We are proud members of the Sawyer County Snowmobile and ATV Alliance and the NW Relic Riders Club. The trails are always well maintained and have adequate signs to direct you to the restaurants and taverns that are scattered throughout the area. Runamuk Rides and Hayward Power Sports have a great selection of rentals.

There are thousands of acres of wild Northwoods forest in this area containing ample game for hunting including whitetail deer, ruffled grouse, waterfowl, turkey and snowshoe rabbits. Nearly 70% of the land in this area is open to the public with Sawyer/Bayfield County Forest, State Forest and the Chequamegon Nicolet National Forest. Some of the country’s best ruffled grouse hunting is within a short drive of many of our properties. What is better than using a lake cabin for that family deer hunt and maybe a little walleye fishing too? Waterfowl hunting abounds on area lakes, wetlands, forest ponds and rivers.

Hiking and trail running are also popular activities in the area. The CAMBA and American Birkebeiner trail systems provide endless miles of lung burning trail running. TheCAMBA system is also great for hiking in addition to the North Country Trail that crosses the rocky crags of the Marengo River Valley.

The Hayward area also has a large selection of restaurants and taverns to fuel your adventures and quench your thirst. Many of the area taverns feature local musicians in a casual and family friendly atmosphere. Lakefront dining makes for a romantic evening or relaxing dinner with friends and family.

Public beaches are located at Lake Hayward, Round Lake, Smith Lake, Moose Lake and Day Lake. Although most of our vacation rentals provide swimming right from the shore or dock. There are also several islands on area lakes that provide sand bars and beaches for public use. Scuba diving and snorkeling opportunities are found on the large clear lakes.

The Namekagon River, which is a headwater to the St Croix provides excellent casual paddling and family tubing. The West and East Forks of the Chippewa, Totagatic and Brule Rivers have some of the best paddling Northern Wisconsin has to offer.

Hayward has numerous golf courses, including Hayward National, Lakeview and The Big Fish course designed by the world-renowned designer, Pete Dye. The kids will enjoy miniature golfing, go-carting, homemade ice cream and much more. Also visit tourist attractions like Lumberjack Village, Weber’s Wilderness Walk or the National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame.
